The actress and writer exploring her uproarious show portraying the grotty glamour of Gen Z existence
The star enters the digital interview and right away begins an apology. “I can’t believe I’m late!” she says, appearing genuinely regretful. Despite being only a bit delayed, she feels compelled to explain. “I tend to talk too much during calls. “Previous discussions went over, and I realized I talk too much!” Thankfully, for a writer, that’s precisely what one hopes to experience. Additionally, it’s pretty expected. Anyone who have seen the boldly queer and brash film titled Bottoms—which Sennott penned with the director and appeared in with close companion the talented actress—would be aware that Sennott has plenty to say, be it about roles, relationships, or the appeal of starting a high-school brawl society. Furthermore, after watching her recent eight-part HBO series titled I Love LA, it is clear that the star holds further perspectives about the struggles of modern youth (As a millennial, she represents an honorary member for this generation, on the cusp with a knack for connecting millennials and Gen Z).
Inspirations and Creative Vision
Parallels to the iconic series Girls can’t be avoided and Sennott admits to being a fan, naming the show alongside Sex and the City, Issa Rae’s show and Atlanta as inspirations for the project, which tracks the travails of a social media star played by Odessa A’Zion and close companion and new representative portrayed by Sennott. However, the most significant spot on concept belonged to the HBO series, that show about an up-and-coming celebrity succeeding in a gritty entertainment industry (notable statement: “only the unsuccessful find joy here”). She began viewing it throughout COVID-19, became “hooked”, and chose to put her own twist on it “targeting women and LGBTQ+ viewers”.
“I sought to highlight online platforms as the new industry, since my professional journey launched there,” she says. The inspiration for the series emerged—partly—from her own, initially rocky, relocation to Los Angeles and from her saturn return, a frequently discussed occurrence for astrology heads. This represented an era that saw her understand major life lessons, work-wise and personally. “In my early 20s I was so messy, crying in public everywhere, all the time,” she admits. “Settling in LA during my mid-twenties brought calm, but soon everything unraveled.” It was almost like these biblical tests …”
Starting Out
Growing up in Connecticut, the star started creating and acting comedy while studying acting at a prestigious arts school. “Despite trying every conventional route, I couldn’t find my footing,” she states. “Every campus humor group turned me down after tryouts.” “Theatre productions at school also didn’t accept me. “It left me questioning my purpose and place.”
She seized control, appearing at open mics with Edebiri and sharing hilarious (and very) unconventional online content online. One, titled Baby Cult, centered on characters fetishistically obsessed with pregnancy; another imagined working at the preppy clothing store Hollister as like being stuck in a scary movie. Interestingly, she connected with Seligman through campus film circles and ended up appearing in her directorial debut, titled Shiva Baby, a tense film set at a funeral gathering with shades of Uncut Gems. The big theme of her path, she notes, has been contemporaries giving her a shot, as opposed to the industry at large. So the old guard wasn’t helpful? “Not the gatekeepers”, she repeats, continuing amusedly: “They prefer we don’t succeed.”
Rising Success
Anyone who were skeptical regarding Sennott previously will surely be regretting it today. As part of she labels a “astonishingly complete” story, she seems to have achieved the perfect project. In 2019 she posted a clip titled on LA life online, in which she parodied film promos (“Substance abuse is rampant here”). Six years on, she’s the co-showrunner (with the co-writer) of a show about LA residents juggling the perks of digital stardom (such as socializing at Elijah Wood’s house) with downsides (your associate being labeled as being a substance-abusing criminal, and perhaps becoming a risky persona non grata). Some could easy to create a series about online fame that was extremely idealized—or, more problematic, one that mocked at its subjects. The series avoids both, creating a depiction of advantaged twentysomething life that’s frank about the mess and the shine.
