Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such drugs must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle management.
