Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
